Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor your independent reading practice.
You will select a book at your own level and will aim to read every day in school and at home. When finished, within 48 hours, you will take a short quiz on a computer (home or school). AR gives teachers and you feedback based on the quiz results. Over time your ZPD range will change. The more you read and quiz, the more you will improve.
You will choose the books to read, rather than having one assigned to you. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience. Teachers and librarians can help you make choices from our vast selection of fiction and non-fiction books.
How do I know what books to read?
The school has coded all books according to the ZPD number. The ranges you
0.1 – 1.9 4.0 – 4.9
2.0 – 2.9 5.0 – 5.9
3.0 – 3.9 6.0 +
You will know their ZPD range and the books they should be choosing. A ZPD can change throughout the year based on STAR reading tests, professional judgement and quiz results.
To experience success from the outset you begin each year by taking books at the lower end of their ZPD range.
Can I read books from home?
Of course, All reading is encouraged. It would be helpful to check the ZPD range of the book here – to see if it is too challenging for your child:
